Photo Quest 2.5 for Macintosh

Thank you for accessing our page!

Why use Photo Quest2.5 for your image database?
(why not another image database program...)

  • Can quickly and simply catalog all of the images in your internet browser's cache files so that you can browse through an image collection at your leisure after going offline.
Because the average image database program uses text files you often run into problems with Progressive Jpeg compatibility, or problems if the data is incomplete.

  • Thumbnail size and compression ratio are easily customizable. Realtime reduction is also included.

  • Creatable, customizable user items.

  • Enter up to 32,000 characters in each text field.

  • Batch copy registered files.

  • Import and export text info from Excel and Filemaker.

  • Powerful search, replace, and filter text functions.

  • Easy sorting of records.

  • Change the order of thumbnailed records with drag & drop.

  • Import invisible files from CD-ROM's (copy, too!).

  • Can be set to be aware of file mapping extensions.

  • Make slideshows and include your own sound track.

    (FAQ)

  • I'm having problems registering Photo Quest.

Please enter the registration information exactly as it appears on the acknowledgement.
Be careful not to add any extra spaces.
Be sure that there is only one space between your first and last names.

  • I don't understand how to extract images from my internet cache files.

    Perform the following steps:

When selecting the files to be registered, select the cache folder (inside the "Preferences" folder inside the system folder) for your internet browser. For example:
    "MyHarddisk:System Folder:Preferences:Netscape f:Cache f"

All images from web pages that you have accessed will be registered in the Photo Quest database. However, when the cache files exceed the storage capacity set in the preferences of your internet browser older files will be deleted, so very old files may no longer be present in your cache folder. If you see an image in the database that you would like to save permanently you can drag & drop the thumbnail of that image into a folder or onto the desktop. The file will automatically be moved from the cache folder of your internet browser to the place where the database thumbnail is dropped. You can also drop thumbnails from the database directly onto an application's icon - the image file will be opened in that application.

  • How do I view invisible files from a CD-ROM?

Select the CD-ROM in the file registration dialog. That's it! Invisible image files will be displayed in the database along with normal files, and can be viewed with just a double click (this function is not active in the unregistered version). However, since these files are not recognized by the Finder, if you wish to open them in another application you will need select the "Copy Files" command from the "Export" menu and copy the desired files to your harddisk.

  • Mpeg can't be played back.

In order to play Mpeg files (includeing VideoCD), you will need to have at least QuickTime2.5 and the MpegExtention installed. You can download these from http://quicktime.apple.com.

  • I can't open a file with Drag&Drop. I can't copy a file.

The file cannot be opened when the file is not mounted or cannot be found. If the file is an invisible file then the Finder will not recognize it. If you wish to open the file in another application you will need select the "Copy Files" command from the "Export" menu and copy the desired files to your harddisk.

  • I want to attach an image to a Quark 3.3 document.

PhotoQuest cannot interact directly with Quark, but it is compatible with Drag & Drop. For more information about adding Drag & Drop to Quark, check out this URL:
    http://www.extensis.com/products/QX-Drag&Drop/
(Note: the above software is property of Extensis, and is not guaranteed to work correctly with Photo Quest).

  • I'd like to distribute my database.

Photo Quest operates as a run-time version when started without entering a user ID.

Registered users may distribute Photo Quest to a third party (for commercial or private use) without charge to the end user. However, this license is limited by the following provisions (seperate arrangements are available, please contact chrisli@bridge1.com for more information):

The documentation must be included in the package.
You must be a registered user.
You must send a sample of the finished product to Bridge 1 Software within one week of completion.
You may not transmit your user idea to a third party.
You may only distribute the latest version of Photo Quest.
When used for commercial purposes you must compose a statement of intent of purpose.
You must prepare an application to be used only for distribution (ie, seperate from you normal, registered version).

  • The thumbnail's do not display well.

By default, thumbnails are uncompressed 112*112 8 bit images. You can fine tune the thumbnail display by choosing the "Thumbnail Setup" command under the "Record" menu. For best quality choose a full color display with no preview. You can also set the size of the thumbnail to be displayed.

  • I started Photo Quest, but nothing happend.

Photo Quest is a database program. You must first create and save a database document by choosing "New" from the "File" menu. You can then add image files to the database by choosing the "Register Files" command from the "Record" window. When you choose the "Register Files" command a dialog will be displayed that allows you to select a folder (directory) - all image files in the selected folder (directory) will be automatically added to the image database.

  • System items cannot be overwritten.

The contents of system items cannot be altered by Photo Quest. If the database information differs from the Finder information you can update the database by choosing the "Update Records" command from the "Records" menu. If you want to change the file path of an item (change the location of a file) you can drag the thumbnail of the file that you want to move and drop it on the folder (or the desktop) to which you wish to move it.

  • I can't alter the "Comments" section.

This is the same question as the one above. The "Comments" section is read from the view file information dialog in the Finder. If you wish to insert a keyword then create a new item and write the keyword to that file's comment box.

  • I don't understand how to use keywords.

In order to create a keyword list select the item to generate keywords from while the database is being displayed in either vertical or horizontal mode. Then chose the "Make Keyword" command from the "Selection" menu (cmd + e).

To display the keyword list choose the "Show Keyword" from the "Selection" menu (cmd + 4). When you double click on a keyword from the list only items in the database containing that keyword will be displayed in the database window. Dropping a thumbnail onto a particular keyword will insert that keyword into each of the dropped items. You can create new keywords by dropping thumbnails on the "New Keyword" item in the keyword list dialog.
